Embracing the Wait

As I sit in the waiting room of The Miami Cancer Center, accompanying my husband for a prostate biopsy, a wave of emotions wash over me. This familiar place, where I once fought my own battles against breast cancer, holds a special significance. It has been eight years since my second breast cancer diagnosis, and yet my heart feels heavy. Despite knowing that God is in control, my mind continues to conjure up scenarios I cannot unsee. Being a survivor is already scary, even after emerging victorious twice. But the thought of my soul mate, the one who unwaveringly supported me through everything, potentially experiencing a similar battle is nothing short of terrifying and heart-wrenching.
Having personally faced cancer the memories and the emotions associated with the battle remain etched in my heart. The Cancer Center becomes a symbolic space, a reminder of the challenges that I overcame and the strength that is required for the battle. However, returning as supporter, accompanying the love of my life, reignites a unique blend of fear and vulnerability I did not realize was still present. As a survivor, I understand the physical emotional and physiological toll that cancer can take.
But, while fear and uncertainty are natural responses, I know in my heart, it is important to remember that we cannot control the future. Acknowledging that God is in control provides solace and a sense of peace. Trusting God in the journey, as challenging as it may be, allows me to channel my energy into supporting him and, if I’m honest, even myself. It is a reminder that we are not alone in this battle and there is strength within us to face whatever lies ahead.
So, that being said, it is not enough to just hope for a happy & healthy life; it’s a combination of mindset, routines and habits working together to get you there! Remember that regular check-ups and screenings are crucial for early detection and improved outcomes in most cancers. As I mentioned in my previous blog – my breast cancer was detected (both times!) during a regularly scheduled mammogram. Early detection most certainly saved my life. For men, a yearly Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test is a simple blood test that can indicate the presence of prostate cancer. If this test is elevated an MRI and biopsy can be done to confirm a diagnosis. But again, prostate cancer is generally considered to be one of the most treatable cancers, especially when detected early. The overall survival rate for prostate cancer is relatively high, with a five-year relative survival rate of around 98% in the United States.
And now, we, EMBRACE THE WAIT.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus - 1 Thessalonians 5:18
ACCEPT YOUR CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES
Acceptance is not giving in or giving up
LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT
Be in this moment and take in all it has to offer
PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD
I will put my trust in Him – Hebrews 2:13
SEEK TO REACH FOR A NEW PERSPECTIVE
Our perspective isn’t necessarily factual

SEEK COMMUNITY AND BE TRANSPARENT
We were never meant to do life alone
LET THE TIME IN THE WAIT BE A GIFT
Open the gift of time
GIVE BACK
We feel better when we help others
LET GO AND LET GOD HAVE CONTROL
TAKE CARE OF YOU
You matter!
